The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was renamed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia after the Security Council unanimously approved a resolution on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The Council ratified a previous agreement reached with the African Union, which emphasized the importance of continuing to fight al-Shabaab.<\/p>\n
The United Arab Emirates, which currently holds the UNSC presidency, announced the resolution.<\/p>\n
“The @UN Security Council has adopted a resolution endorsing the @ AfricanUnion Peace & Security Council’s decision to reconfigure @AMISOM after months of constructive dialogue. The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is now in charge “According to the UNSC.<\/p>\n
“This resolution reflects a broad consensus on the need for a reconfigured African Union mission in Somalia focused on enabling and supporting the Somali security transition, as a result of extensive and constructive discussions between the Government of Somalia, the UN, the AU, and the EU.”<\/p>\n
The Council expressed the hope that the Somali government would gradually take on more security responsibilities in the future.<\/p>\n
The new mission’s goal is to enable Somali forces to assume primary security responsibility.<\/p>\n
“However, we must acknowledge that Somalia continues to face numerous security challenges, the most serious of which is the terrorist group Al Shabab’s ongoing attacks.
