On Sunday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with Luigi Di Maio, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to review bilateral relations, including the European Union Training Mission in Somalia.
President Mohamud was congratulated on his victory by Di Maio, who also emphasized the Italian government’s support for Somalia’s development objectives.
The foreign minister and President Mohamud discussed working together to rebuild the country’s military forces, provide drought relief, reduce debt, and encourage international investment in the country’s resources, according to Somali official media.
Di Maio’s trip to Somalia was the first by an Italian foreign minister in over a decade. Former Minister Giulio Terzi paid the most recent visit in 2012.
After his journey, Di Maio will continue his East Africa tour.
