At least 11 Somali government and regional forces were killed in a fierce battle against al-Shabab militants on Wednesday in southern Somalia. The clash took place in Wayaanta, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Kismayo in Jubaland state. Somali forces launched an assault on what they believed to be an al-Shabab gathering site, sparking deadly confrontations.

Heavy Casualties Reported on Both Sides

According to three officials familiar with the situation, who spoke anonymously as they were unauthorized to talk to media, the clash resulted in over 20 injuries among Somali soldiers. One of the officials claimed that more than 20 terrorists were also killed during the encounter. The region, previously targeted by Somali forces, saw a significant operation last year, where an al-Shabab commander, considered a deputy emir, was killed.

Previous Operations and Ongoing Al-Shabab Threat

Last year, in the same area, the U.S. military conducted an airstrike in support of Somali forces, killing three of the terrorists. Al-Shabab, which has been in conflict with Somali governments since 2006, retains strong control over many rural areas in southern and central Somalia. However, since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud took office in May 2022, Somali forces—backed by local militias—have successfully reclaimed territory from al-Shabab in central regions.

Recent Counter-Terrorism Efforts against Al-Shabab in Somalia

On Sunday, Somalia’s intelligence agency announced a separate operation in the Middle Shabelle region, north of Mogadishu. During a 12-hour offensive, Somali forces reportedly killed 27 al-Shabab militants who were planning to carry out attacks. Vehicles and other equipment were destroyed, marking what officials described as a “successful” operation to protect the public.

    Continued Threat of the Al-Shabab

Despite losing ground and suffering heavy casualties, al-Shabab remains a persistent threat to Somali and African Union forces. The group has carried out several recent attacks, including a mortar assault on African Union forces stationed at Mogadishu’s international airport. On Sunday, two AU soldiers lost their lives and another was injured after al-Shabab fired four rockets at their base.
