Ilhan Omar opposes US sanctions on Somalia 2010 & 2012
US Congressman Ilhan Omar has written a letter to President Joe Biden’s administration calling for a review of sanctions imposed on Somalia in 2010 and 2012, which remain in place.
Since the imposition of these sanctions, the situation in Somalia has changed dramatically. In the letter, Ilhan Omar asks the Biden administration how sanctions policy plays an important role in Somalia’s broader strategy.
April 13, 2010 – Former United States President Brack Obama has issued an executive order imposing financial sanctions on those involved in the deteriorating situation in Somalia, including piracy off the coast of Somalia.
The United States has agreed to use the International Emergency Response Plan (IEEPA) to respond to U.S. national security threats and foreign policy threats.
Sanctions include imposing sanctions on individuals or entities that engage in acts that directly or indirectly threaten the peace, security and stability of Somalia.
