    Man United is eliminated from the Champions League in the last 16 by Atletico Madrid.

    Manchester United was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League when Atletico Madrid defeated the English team 1-0 in the round of 16 second leg encounter on Tuesday.

    Renan Lodi, a Brazilian defender, scored the game-winning goal for Atletico Madrid in the 41st minute at Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium.

    The visitors qualified for the quarterfinals thanks to his goal.

    The first match, staged on Feb. 23 at Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, concluded 1-1, giving Atletico Madrid a 2-1 aggregate victory.

    Manchester United’s European campaign for the 2021-22 season has come to an end with the defeat at home.

    Manchester United’s title drought continues, with the Red Devils having not won a trophy since winning the second-tier UEFA Europa League in 2017.

    Separately, Benfica of Portugal has also qualified for the Champions League quarterfinals.

    Darwin Nunez, a Uruguayan attacker for Benfica, scored in the 77th minute to give the Lisbon club a 1-0 victory over Ajax in Amsterdam.

    Benfica won 3-2 on aggregate to advance to the final eight of Europe’s top club competition.

    Ajax has been eliminated from the competition and will now concentrate on the Dutch league.

    The quarterfinalists have been announced as Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Real Madrid.

    After Wednesday’s fixtures, two more clubs will join these six.

    The draw for the quarterfinals will take place on March 18 in Nyon, Switzerland.

    On May 28, 2022, the Champions League final will be held in the Stade de France in Saint-Denis.

    The remaining 16 games are still to be played.
