PSG began the end-of-season run-in with a crushing win at the Parc des Princes, following three defeats in four games before the international break and a heartbreaking Champions League exit.
PSG scored five goals against Lorient and only allowed one goal to be scored against them. With the win, PSG extended their lead at the top of the table to twelve points. Neymar scored the game’s first and last goals. Mbappé boosted the team’s hopes by scoring in the 28th and 67th minutes, as well as setting up Neymar and Messi for goals. In the 73rd minute, Messi scored his first goal.
This is the first time in the French league that all three players have scored in the same game for PSG.
PSG leads Marseille by 12 points and needs just 13 more points from their final eight games to clinch a record-tying 10th French championship.
“We have to keep winning and demonstrating that we want to win this 10th title,” Neymar said to the media.
“Losing is extremely difficult, as was the case in Madrid. We must continue to progress. We were devastated to lose (in Europe), as we had hoped to win the competition.”
On 12 minutes, Messi and Mbappe combined to set up Neymar for the game’s first goal, the Brazilian scoring for the sixth time in another injury-plagued season.
Mbappe then doubled the lead with a near-post finish, but Terem Moffi gave Lorient hope early in the second half by capitalizing on a defensive blunder.
The Nigerian pounced on a stray pass from Achraf Hakimi, beating an unconvinced Marquinhos and poking past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
With Lorient threatening to re-enter the game, Mbappe restored PSG’s two-goal lead by drilling home from 20 meters, putting him one goal behind Monaco’s Wissam Ben Yedder in the league.
On 73 minutes, Mbappe set up Messi for a fourth goal off the underside of the crossbar, just moments after Sergio Ramos came on for the first time since January 23.
Supporters booed both Neymar and Messi during PSG’s last home game. This time, it was Ramos who was booed after a disastrous first season in Paris, which was marred by a calf injury.
Mbappe came close to scoring a hat-trick after a blistering burst into the box, but his shot grazed the post.
Instead, he turned provider in the final minute, exchanging passes with Neymar and sending the Brazilian through to give Mauricio Pochettino’s side their 14th win in 15 home games.
