According to a spokeswoman on Friday, the UN wants to extend and expand the grain agreement with Ukraine for one year.
“To ensure that individuals openly state, “Yes, this will be extended a further year,” we’re working to eliminate the confusion. But even though we are focused on getting there, “Stephane Dujarric stated at a press conference.
He said that the Black Sea Grain Initiative, as the agreement is also known, is being expanded by the UN.
He continued, “The Secretary-General is spending a lot of time on the phone attempting to unlock the locations in various bureaucracies that are obstructing this facilitated trade of Russian food and fertilizer.”
Despite the agreement, Russian authorities have griped that Western sanctions make it more difficult for them to sell food and fertilizer.
On July 22, Turkey, the UN, Russia, and Ukraine reached a historic agreement to reopen three Ukrainian ports — Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Yuzhny — for grain that had been delayed for months due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The agreement was made in response to the world food crisis.
The agreement’s first term of 120 days ends in November.
