The administration of Sanaag region has announced that the deadline for people from southern Somalia in Erigavo to leave has come to an end.

The deputy governor of Sanaag region Mohamed Khalif Nur and a large contingent of police vehicles have started arresting people from the south Somalia in Erigavo town this morning.

“Yesterday was the 14th day. Today, our duty is to arrest anyone who is not legally present in this country.  “On October 10, we announced the deadline and we will arrest non-Somalilanders, past this date” said the deputy mayor of Erigavo.

“Those who went to the villages and believed that the villages were not controlled by the government and those we caught trading in the city deserve what the law says.  “Anyone who disobeys the government’s order will be dealt with by the law enforcement agencies.”

He also warned those who try to evade the police and plan to trade in the Sanaag region.

“We are going to a village, we are going to a district, and whoever is in the Sanaag region who is not a Somalilander will be duly arrested.” Mohamed Khalif Nur said.

A large contingent of police vehicles was seen on the streets and main markets of Erigavo, where people of non-Somaliland origin were forcibly detained.

This come after the Sanaag regional administration had previously announced a two-week deadline for people from southern Somalia to leave Erigavo, which ended yesterday.
