    AU PSC led by Egyptian Ambassador release statement on discussion with Somali Government about AMISOM, future

    The Egyptian Ambassador to Ethiopia and The African Union, has led a delegation from the African Union Peace and Security Council, Ambassador Mohamed Omar Gad gave an overview of the meetings in Mogadishu.

    The ambassador and his delegation, who concluded their visit today, first thanked the government and the public for their hospitality.

    Gad pointed out that during their stay in Mogadishu they met with the country’s top leaders, politicians and various segments of Somali society.

    The AU-PSC, the Peace and Security Committee is also keen to reach a consensus on the future of AMISOM in Somalia, through dialogue.

    “I believe that we will make a united decision on a common position and agreement on the future of AMISOM, after 2021 if we have a dialogue and discussion on the AMISOM mission,” said Egyptian Ambassador to Ethiopia Dr.  Mohamed Omar Gad.

    Finally, he underlined that the African Union stands with Somalia in its efforts to move beyond its transition.

    The statement came as the federal government of Somalia has relaxed its stance on the structure of the AMISOM mission in the country, noting that it is ready to continue negotiations with the African Union.
