A 6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes New Zealand’s North Island.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Paraparaumu, a town in New Zealand’s southwestern North Island, state-run media reported on Wednesday.

According to Radio New Zealand, the quake struck at 7.38 p.m. (0638GMT) about 50 kilometers (31 miles) northwest of Paraparaumu at a depth of 57 kilometers (35 miles).

According to the report, the strong tremor frightened individuals.

There has been no immediate damage reported in the area.
