On Thursday, unidentified drones targeted villages in the Hiiraan region, where fierce battle has raged since Wednesday evening between Somali government forces backed by local militia groups and al Shabab.

Residents claim combat erupted on Wednesday in Iji and Afad villages near Jalalaqsi district after joint troops assaulted terrorists attempting to cross the Shabelle River to the other side.

According to Somali government officials, the fights in Iji and Afad resulted in a devastating setback for the al-Shabab group.

Official casualties from the combat, however, remain unknown.
According to the most current reports from the area, government forces and local militia have totally seized control of the Afad village in the Hiiraan region, located between the Jalalaqsi and Buulaburte districts.

Daud Aweis, Somalia’s Information Minister, stated during a news conference in Mogadishu on Wednesday that 200 al-Shabab militants were killed this week during operations in Galmudug, South West State, and Jubaland.

Since President Mohamud’s re-election for a second term in May last year, the Somali National Army has been fighting al-Shabaab insurgents.
