Election authorities in Nigeria have begun counting ballots in polling locations around the country, signaling the end of voting.
Nigerians flocked to the polls early Saturday to vote for a new president, Federal House of Representatives, and Senate.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, voting would begin at 8.30 a.m. and end at 2.30 p.m. (INEC).
INEC Chairman Mahmoud Yakubu said voting had been suspended in sections of southern Edo State owing to irregularities.
“In Esp State, there were several instances of violence. We have decided to postpone the local House of Representatives election. Polls there will now take place concurrently with the governorship election on March 11 “Yakubu made the announcement during a press conference in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
Suleiman Abdulsalam, an election official, said voting prolonged into the evening because many voters were still in line.
“We have orders to accredit voters who are waiting in line between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and let them to vote,” he told Anadolu.
