On Monday, Juan Manuel Rodrguez Vázquez, Cuba’s new non-resident Ambassador to Somalia, handed his credentials letter to the country’s foreign minister, Abshir Omar Jama, in Mogadishu.

Over the past 46 years, Somalia has maintained no diplomatic relations with Cuba.

“We agreed that the new ambassador transmitted a message from Cuban officials that the two countries should restart diplomatic relations on the basis of collaboration and mutual respect,” Haruse added.

Somalia and Cuba established diplomatic relations in 1972, but they were severed in 1977 when Cuba supported Ethiopia in the Somalia-Ethiopia war.

Abshir Omar Jama, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, got a copy of Mohamed-Rachid Ibrahim Yusuf’s credentials as the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Djibouti to the Federal Republic of Somalia last week.
