Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, declared on Wednesday that his country would keep up its efforts to explore space.

“There is no doubt that Russia will explore space. At a gala event celebrating Cosmonautics Day, Putin declared, “We will surely work in this direction.

Putin added that Russia must develop independent space systems and a Russian orbital station that will serve as a base for research and space exploration.

In addition, according to Putin, the new orbital station will be focused on “solving the problems that our country faces in the broadest sense of the word.”

For us, these are cutting-edge technology essential for the planet; this is a qualitatively new scale for the advancement of our economy and science; and it represents a dependable, contemporary level of national security, said Putin.

He also advocated for Russia to rapidly resume its lunar program and start planning trips to other planets.

On April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made the first manned space trip, which is celebrated as Cosmonautics Day.
