The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) announced the completion of a two-week training for 55 Somali traffic police officers to improve their ability to manage traffic flow and protect public road safety.

ATMIS stated that the intense trainer course, which concluded on Friday, was held concurrently in Mogadishu, Jowhar in Hirshabelle State, Baidoa in Southwest State, and Kismayo in Jubaland State.

ATMIS Police Commissioner Hillary Sao Kanu, who concluded the training in Mogadishu, advised the officers to share their newly learned expertise in order to improve service delivery.

“I believe that the participants gained a great deal of knowledge and experience.” “I want to encourage everyone to take this programme seriously,” Kanu said in a statement made Friday in Mogadishu.

“You should not keep the knowledge you have gained to yourself, but should share it with others who were not fortunate enough to be a part of this programme,” she continued.

Somali Deputy Police Commissioner Osman Abdullahi Mohamed stated that the training will help to transform traffic management in cities and towns around the country that are experiencing traffic jams.

“The skills and knowledge you have acquired will enable you to manage traffic and ensure safety on our roads,” Abdullahi stated.

The training included a variety of topics, including traffic officer duties, road safety measures, common traffic offences and accident causes, road user rights, and accident investigation.

ATMIS police training and development coordinator Samuel Asiedu Okanta said the capacity building training is part of ongoing preparations to transfer over security responsibility to Somali security forces.

ATMIS is set to remove 2,000 personnel by the end of June, followed by another 3,000 by September, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2628 and 2670, which require ATMIS to transfer over security responsibilities in agreed-upon areas to Somali security forces.
