Somali Magazine September 16,2023-Following this weekend’s terrible floods that killed thousands, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has despatched 29 tonnes of assistance material to Libya.
“With enough supplies to reach almost 250,000 people with health aid, the shipment reflects an intensified emergency response to the unprecedented flooding in eastern Libya in the aftermath of Storm Daniel,” the WHO said in a statement on Saturday.
“Among the supplies are critical medicines, trauma and emergency surgery supplies, and medical equipment.” There are also body bags for the deceased’s safe and dignified movement and burial.”
Following the horrific flooding produced by Mediterranean storm Daniel, at least 6,000 people were killed and many more are still missing.
Derna was the hardest devastated by the devastating flooding that forced two dams in the city to collapse.
More than 9,000 people are still missing, according to the WHO, while the dead of 3,958 individuals have been found and identified as a result of the flood tragedy.
“This is a disaster of epic proportions,” stated WHO Representative in Libya Dr. Ahmed Zouiten. “We are heartbroken by the unfathomable loss of thousands of souls.” Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, as well as the entire devastated community.
“We are committed to providing the necessary support in order to restore health services for the affected population in eastern Libya,” he added.
