Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi stated on Monday that he will seek for a third term.

Sisi, whose current six-year term expires in 2024, was generally anticipated to run again in the December presidential elections.

Sisi announced his intention to run for re-election in a televised speech.

Thousands of Egyptians gathered in numerous Egyptian squares to show support for Sisi’s campaign for a third term in power.

Egypt will hold presidential elections between December 10 and 12.

According to the country’s election authority, candidates intending to participate in the elections can submit for candidacy from Oct. 5 to 14.

Seven political personalities have declared their intentions to run, including former MP Ahmed Tantawi, who is expected to be a major opposition contender if he officially enters the contest.

Candidates must have the support of at least 20 legislators or 25,000 registered voters from at least 15 provinces, with a minimum of 1,000 endorsements from each governorate.
