Somali Magazine October 21, 2023- The Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Energy and Water Resources is issuing warnings about rising water levels in the Shabelle River in Beledweyn town, stating that water canals have been opened but the risk remains, while the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) continues to raise awareness about El Nino.
The water level of the Shebelle River in Beledwayne surpassed the low flood risk threshold at midnight on October 21, 2023, and continued to rise. Initially, flooding occurred in some areas of town as a result of the Dagahjabis canal’s inability to drain water due to clogged sluice gates.
This problem was eventually remedied, and water flowed easily through the canal once more. Though the water level remains over the high-risk level, the prompt opening of the sluice gates prevented Beledwayne from experiencing more catastrophic floods.
Dr. Ahmed A. Adan, Deputy Commissioner, presided over a meeting with international agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in the country.
The meeting’s goal is to collaborate in dealing with the El Nino scenario, flooding fears, and how to offer humanitarian relief to flood victims.
