The United Nations Security Council voted on Tuesday to extend the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) for another year, until October 31, 2024.

The 15-member council unanimously adopted Resolution 2705, which requests UNSOM to continue to maintain and strengthen its presence across Somalia in consultation with the federal government of Somalia and Somalia’s federal member states, as well as to strengthen its cooperation with Somalia and the African Union.

It encourages UNSOM to continue coordinating UN activities and to maximise cooperative approaches and joint programming in relevant areas to promote Somalia’s state-building and peacebuilding.

It recalls and calls for the timely implementation of the recommendations of the UNSOM strategic review, including planning to develop a roadmap for the eventual transition from UNSOM to the UN Country Team, finalising the UNSOM staffing and configuration review, and moving towards a common understanding of an end state.

The Security Council established UNSOM in June 2013 to help state building and peacekeeping in Somalia.
