Somali Magazine – On Monday, China’s permanent representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, urged for continuing international support for Somalia’s efforts to achieve political stability, security transition, and economic and social rehabilitation.

At a Security Council meeting on Somalia, Zhang stated that the UN and the international community’s attention and support for the country must not wane, as 2024 is essential for the country’s democratic process, security transition, and national restoration.

According to Zhang, China supports all parties in Somalia in settling their disagreements via communication and consultation while also furthering the political transition.

“It should be underlined that the choice of political system and growth route is entirely local to Somalia. He urged the international community to follow the Somali-led and Somali-owned ethos rather than imposing an externally imposed governance model.

Regarding Somalia’s security transition, Zhang stated that the international community should assist the Somali federal government in consolidating prior gains in counter-terrorism and stability maintenance.

He emphasized the importance of assisting the Somali security sector in developing its capabilities to take on increased security responsibility.

Zhang also emphasized the importance of supporting Somalia’s economic and social rehabilitation.

China appreciates the Somali federal government’s recent launch of the Centennial Vision 2060, which outlines fundamental responsibilities for national development, according to the envoy.
