According to the United Nations, 4.5 million people are displaced in Ethiopia.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), over 4.5 million people are currently displaced in Ethiopia, both rural and urban.

The displaced people are primarily from the East African country’s Somali, Oromia, and Tigray areas, according to the UNOCHA’s Ethiopia internal displacement overview, which was issued late Thursday.

UNOCHA data reveal that the majority of displacements are caused by wars, which peaked in 2021. Approximately 56% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been displaced for more than a year, with 23% displaced for two to four years.

According to assessments, many IDPs, particularly those in long-term displacement situations, can be aided in returning, relocating, or integrating locally.

Since January 2022, around 3.3 million IDPs have returned to their original locations throughout the East African country.

“However, due to ongoing displacement in several regions, the number of IDPs today stands at 4.5 million,” according to the statement.

Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous country after Nigeria, has experienced a number of man-made and natural disasters in recent years, including intercommunal conflict.
