In a significant pre-election shift, the Vice President of Somaliland, Abdirahman Abdillahi Ismail Saylici, publicly endorsed the opposition Waddani Party just two days before Somaliland’s presidential election. At a press conference held in Hargeisa, Saylici declared his support for Waddani’s candidate, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, marking a rare split within Somaliland’s ruling structure.

    Somaliland President’s Call for Change

Vice President Saylici, who has held his position for over 14 years, urged voters to back “change-seeking” factions, highlighting the need for political reform. Criticizing the current administration led by President Muse Bihi Abdi, Saylici expressed concern over the president’s ability to govern effectively. “President Muse can no longer be trusted to rule the country; he has abandoned the oath he swore to the nation. The interest of Somaliland is with the reformers,” Saylici stated, marking a strong rebuke of the Kulmiye Party from within the government.

Shifting Allegiances in Somaliland: Support for Regional and Opposition Groups

Saylici further distanced himself from the Kulmiye-aligned group Hilaac and extended his support to Barwaqo, a political group from the Awdal region. This strategic alliance signals his commitment to an alternative political pathway, diverging sharply from his traditional allegiance to the ruling party.

Growing Support for Waddani Party’s Presidential Candidate

With Saylici’s endorsement, Abdirahman Irro’s campaign has gained momentum. Influential figures, business leaders, and other prominent supporters have rallied around the Waddani Party, bolstering Irro’s push for reform. Expressing gratitude for Saylici’s endorsement, Irro called on Somalilanders to join in supporting political change. “Together, we can bring change to Somaliland’s government,” he said, underscoring his reform-driven agenda.

Analysts: Endorsement May Shift Political Balance

Political analysts believe that Saylici’s support could significantly bolster Irro’s prospects in a highly competitive race, potentially challenging the current administration’s hold on power. This endorsement comes as Somaliland faces crucial political decisions that may reshape its future direction.
