The Somali government has appointed Dr. Abdisalan Abdirahman Mohamed as the new Director General of the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics (SNBS), marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s statistical governance. The announcement was made on Thursday following the Cabinet’s ratification of the appointment during its weekly meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

The recommendation for Dr. Mohamed’s appointment came from the Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, Mohamud Abdirahman Sheikh Farah.

    A Vision for Data-Driven Development

Dr. Mohamed, who holds a PhD in Economics, brings a wealth of expertise to the role. He is expected to lead efforts to enhance the bureau’s statistical framework, providing accurate and timely data to support Somalia’s policy and development agenda. His leadership is anticipated to bolster data-driven governance and promote transparency.

The SNBS has expressed optimism about the future under Dr. Mohamed’s guidance. “We look forward to leveraging his experience to further our mission of advancing Somalia’s statistical capabilities,” the bureau stated.

    Acknowledgment of Past Leadership

Outgoing Director General Sharmarke Farah was commended for his significant contributions to the bureau. His tenure saw progress in improving the SNBS’s operational capacity and infrastructure.

    Strengthening Somalia’s Statistical Systems

    Impact on Development Policies

Accurate data collection and analysis are vital for Somalia as it seeks to address pressing issues such as poverty reduction, education reforms, and infrastructure development. The SNBS plays a critical role in providing insights that guide these efforts.
