Egypt has reiterated its commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, stability, and unity at the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) meeting held on Thursday. Ambassador Ashraf Swelam, Egypt’s assistant foreign minister for African Organizations and Assemblies, conveyed this message on behalf of Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty during discussions centered on Somalia’s security transition.
The meeting focused on the impending expiration of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which has been operational since 2022, and the deployment of a new mission, the AU Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), in January 2025.
Transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM
ATMIS has played a pivotal role in Somalia’s efforts to combat violent extremism and strengthen national security. However, the mission’s mandate is set to conclude at the end of December 2024. AUSSOM, the successor force, aims to build on ATMIS’s achievements while providing continued support to Somali security forces.
Ambassador Swelam emphasized Egypt’s readiness to assist in this crucial transition. He praised Somalia’s progress in countering terrorism but underscored the need for sustained African and international collaboration to ensure a seamless transfer of responsibilities.
Egypt’s Role in Rebuilding Somalia
Under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s leadership, Egypt has been actively involved in rebuilding Somalia’s institutions and fostering economic development. This support extends to educational initiatives, capacity-building programs, and infrastructure development, reflecting Egypt’s broader commitment to Somalia’s long-term stability.
Ambassador Swelam also called for international funding to support AUSSOM, highlighting the importance of mechanisms like UN Security Council Resolution 2719 to secure resources for the new mission.
Continued Challenges in Somalia
Despite progress, Somalia continues to face significant security challenges. Terrorist attacks have claimed dozens of lives and injured hundreds in recent years, underscoring the urgent need for effective security measures. The transition to AUSSOM is seen as a critical step toward consolidating Somalia’s security gains and addressing ongoing threats.
African Union’s Role in Regional Stability
The AU’s contributions to peacekeeping and stabilization efforts across the continent were commended during the meeting. The deployment of AUSSOM is expected to reinforce these efforts, ensuring that Somalia remains on a path to peace and stability.
Conclusion
Egypt’s reaffirmation of its commitment to Somalia’s stability and security highlights the importance of regional and international cooperation in addressing security challenges. As Somalia transitions from ATMIS to AUSSOM, continued support from the African Union, Egypt, and the global community will be essential in fostering lasting peace and development in the Horn of Africa.
