Kawala FC, a grassroots football team based in Smethwick, West Midlands, has achieved what few teams can dream of—a league and cup double in its debut season. Founded in 2023 by Somali immigrant Salah Aliderie, the club is a testament to the unifying power of football. Under cold December floodlights, the team trains with enthusiasm and determination, preparing for their next match in the Birmingham and District League, Division One.

Comprising players and coaches from diverse backgrounds, including Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea, and Poland, the club has rapidly become a beacon of hope for young people in Birmingham. “Football speaks all languages,” said Aliderie, emphasizing the team’s inclusive nature.

    From Five-a-Side to Full-Scale Football

What began as informal five-a-side games quickly grew into something much larger. The word spread within the Somali community, attracting a wave of players. Despite financial constraints, with some players unable to afford weekly fees, Aliderie and his coaching staff funded the club themselves.

“Kawala FC is special because it lets youth flourish,” Aliderie shared. “Many players come from disadvantaged backgrounds, with few opportunities. Here, they find not just a team but a safe space to grow.”

    Community Impact and Growing Fanbase

Kawala FC’s success has fostered a sense of community pride. By the end of their first season, hundreds of fans from Birmingham’s Somali community cheered the team to victory in the Bill Hill Cup and league title.

For 20-year-old player Sudeys Moalim, representing his heritage on the pitch is deeply personal. “My parents fled war-torn Somalia for a better life. To honor them by playing football is indescribable,” he said.

Coach Abdek Abdi echoed this sentiment, describing the team as a brotherhood. “It’s deeper than football. We’re like family here.”

    Bigger Dreams on the Horizon

Kawala FC isn’t stopping at grassroots success. The club envisions establishing an academy and youth center to nurture local talent. Aliderie dreams of one day producing Premier League stars and competing in the Somali British Champions League—a grassroots competition celebrating teams of Somali heritage in the UK.

For now, the team remains focused on excelling in their current league. With 21 goals in their last five games, they are a force to be reckoned with.

    Football as a Lifeline

In a city facing challenges such as youth crime and the closure of youth clubs, Kawala FC offers a lifeline. The club provides not just physical activity but also a sense of belonging and purpose for young players.

As the floodlights shine over their training sessions, the players and staff of Kawala FC embody the resilience and passion that grassroots football is all about.
