Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty has reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, aligning with international law principles. The announcement was made during a phone call between Abdelatty and his Somali counterpart, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, where both diplomats discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations.
During the call, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s commitment to fully backing Somalia’s efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace and stability in the country. He highlighted the importance of supporting Somalia’s initiatives to secure its territories and prevent the spread of extremist activities, which, if unchecked, could destabilize the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Egypt believes that a stable Somalia contributes significantly to regional security, fostering economic growth and cooperation among neighboring nations.
The Egyptian foreign minister further expressed his government’s readiness to offer technical assistance and capacity-building support to Somalia’s national institutions. This support aims to empower Somalia’s institutions to fulfill their essential roles in governance, development, and peacebuilding, meeting the aspirations of the Somali people for a secure and prosperous future.
The call also underscored the broader strategic interests both nations share, with Egypt emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties with African countries. Abdelatty noted that Egypt views Somalia as a key partner in its African foreign policy, especially concerning collective efforts to address challenges such as terrorism, climate change, and regional development.
Egypt’s consistent diplomatic support for Somalia reflects a broader commitment to pan-African solidarity, particularly as Cairo continues to strengthen relations across the continent through diplomatic engagements and development initiatives. Egypt has been actively involved in supporting African countries through educational programs, health partnerships, and security collaborations, further enhancing its leadership role on the continent.
The two ministers also touched on the importance of collaboration within regional organizations, particularly the African Union (AU), emphasizing the need for collective strategies to ensure peace and security across the region. Egypt has consistently advocated for a more unified African voice on the global stage and has been vocal about supporting African-led solutions to the continent’s challenges.
Abdelatty’s remarks align with Egypt’s longstanding policy of supporting African unity and stability. In recent years, Egypt has played a proactive role in conflict resolution and development support, including mediation efforts and technical aid across the continent. This phone call with the Somali foreign minister reaffirms Egypt’s proactive diplomatic efforts to bolster peace and security in East Africa.
Somalia, which has faced decades of conflict and instability, continues to make strides toward national reconciliation and development. However, persistent threats from extremist groups like Al-Shabaab remain a significant challenge. Egypt’s pledge to support Somalia in combating terrorism aligns with international efforts to bring stability to the region, including contributions from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and other global partners.
In conclusion, Abdelatty’s reaffirmation of Egypt’s support for Somalia’s sovereignty and unity demonstrates Cairo’s broader foreign policy goals of promoting stability, development, and cooperation across Africa. As both countries continue to strengthen their diplomatic ties, this commitment serves as a positive step towards a more secure and prosperous Horn of Africa.
