In a bold move to strengthen Somaliland defense capabilities, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has announced plans to modernize the region’s military, equip it with advanced weaponry, and significantly increase soldiers’ salaries. The announcement, made during a meeting with senior military officials in Hargeisa on Saturday, January 18, 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to building a robust and professional armed forces capable of securing Somaliland’s borders and airspace.
“I have embarked on a political campaign to establish a national army with the latest training and modern weapons, capable of securing Somaliland’s borders, airspace, and seas. My primary goal is to re-establish and modernize the military’s capabilities,” President Irro stated during the meeting.
The president’s vision for a modernized military includes the introduction of new military laws, the establishment of an air force and reserves, and the integration of civilian forces formed in Somaliland’s eastern regions during recent conflicts.
