In a bold move to strengthen Somaliland defense capabilities, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has announced plans to modernize the region’s military, equip it with advanced weaponry, and significantly increase soldiers’ salaries. The announcement, made during a meeting with senior military officials in Hargeisa on Saturday, January 18, 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to building a robust and professional armed forces capable of securing Somaliland’s borders and airspace.

“I have embarked on a political campaign to establish a national army with the latest training and modern weapons, capable of securing Somaliland’s borders, airspace, and seas. My primary goal is to re-establish and modernize the military’s capabilities,” President Irro stated during the meeting.

The president’s vision for a modernized military includes the introduction of new military laws, the establishment of an air force and reserves, and the integration of civilian forces formed in Somaliland’s eastern regions during recent conflicts. These measures aim to create a more cohesive and effective defense structure, ensuring that Somaliland is prepared to address both internal and external security challenges.

One of the most significant aspects of the announcement is the pledge to increase soldiers’ salaries by 200%. President Irro emphasized that this commitment is already being implemented, reflecting his administration’s dedication to improving the welfare of military personnel. “A strong military is critical to establishing a dignified government,” he said, reiterating his campaign promises to prioritize the armed forces.

The announcement comes at a critical time for Somaliland’s military, which has faced setbacks in recent months. The region’s forces suffered significant losses in clashes with SSC-Khatumo forces in the Sool region, particularly in Las Anod. Hundreds of Somaliland soldiers were captured, and military equipment fell into the hands of opposing forces. These challenges have highlighted the need for a comprehensive overhaul of Somaliland’s defense strategy and capabilities.

Somaliland President Irro’s plans to modernize the military are seen as a response to these setbacks, as well as a proactive measure to enhance Somaliland’s security posture. By equipping the military with advanced weaponry and providing soldiers with better training and resources, the government aims to restore confidence in the armed forces and ensure their readiness to defend the region’s sovereignty.

The integration of civilian forces from Somaliland’s eastern regions is another key component of the modernization plan. These forces, which emerged during recent conflicts, have played a crucial role in defending local communities. By incorporating them into the national military structure, the government hopes to create a more unified and coordinated defense system.

The establishment of an air force and reserves is also expected to bolster Somaliland’s defense capabilities. An air force would provide the region with greater control over its airspace, while reserves would ensure a steady supply of trained personnel in times of need. These initiatives reflect a long-term vision for a self-reliant and resilient military.

President Irro’s announcement has been met with optimism by many in Somaliland, who view the modernization of the military as a necessary step toward achieving greater stability and security. However, the success of these plans will depend on the government’s ability to secure the necessary resources and implement the reforms effectively.

As Somaliland continues to navigate complex security challenges, the modernization of its military represents a significant step forward. By investing in the armed forces and prioritizing the welfare of soldiers, the government is laying the groundwork for a more secure and prosperous future.
