Heavy fighting erupted on Friday between the Somali National Army (SNA), supported by local Ma’awisley militia, and Al-Shabaab militants in Cadow Gureey, a strategic village in the Bula Burte district of the Hiiraan region. The fierce clashes involved heavy weaponry and targeted forested areas where Al-Shabaab had fortified their defensive positions.
Initial reports indicate casualties on both sides, though communication challenges and widespread displacement of residents have made it difficult to confirm the exact numbers. The recent conflict follows an intense eight-hour battle on Thursday in Ji’ibow, a village along the Shabelle River. Government forces and their local allies successfully seized the village, marking a significant victory in their ongoing efforts to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s rural strongholds.
The capture of Cadow Gureey has been described by military officials as a critical achievement in reducing militant influence along key riverine routes. Joint forces reportedly cleared the area of Al-Shabaab fighters, who had constructed extensive underground bunkers to resist advancing troops. A senior military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity due to operational security concerns, emphasized that the operation is essential for securing rural areas and disrupting Al-Shabaab’s logistical networks.
The ongoing offensive has forced dozens of pastoral families to flee the region, leaving many without immediate access to food, shelter, and essential services. Humanitarian organizations have raised concerns about the growing displacement crisis, noting that continued clashes have made it increasingly difficult to deliver aid to affected communities.
The Hiiraan region has become a focal point in Somalia’s broader campaign against Al-Shabaab. Since late 2024, the federal government has intensified operations, assuming direct security responsibilities in the region. With backing from local militias and international partners, Somali forces have been targeting key militant hideouts to disrupt their operations and supply chains.
Military analysts believe that the success of these operations is crucial for stabilizing the region and paving the way for future development initiatives. However, the humanitarian toll remains a pressing concern. Displaced families are in dire need of assistance, and the volatile security situation complicates relief efforts.
Despite these challenges, the government and local militias remain resolute in their mission to reclaim territory and restore peace in the Hiiraan region. As more updates emerge from the conflict zones, the focus will be on assessing the long-term impact of these operations and addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected population.
