CAIRO, EGYPT – February 14, 2025 – Egypt has announced its participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) upon the request of the Somali government. This decision was revealed by the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, during a meeting with the European Union’s envoy to the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.

    Strengthening Regional Security Around Egypt

Egypt’s involvement in AMISOM is aimed at supporting the fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab and contributing to peace efforts in Somalia. The deployment of Egyptian troops is expected to bolster the mission’s efforts to stabilize the region and enhance security.

    International Support and Collaboration

The move has been welcomed by the international community, with the African Union and the United States expressing their support for Egypt’s participation. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also expressed gratitude for Egypt’s support, hoping that the additional troops will help achieve lasting peace and stability in Somalia.

    Egypt’s Regional Dynamics

Egypt’s participation in AMISOM has raised concerns among some regional players, particularly Ethiopia, which has been cautious about Egypt’s broader strategic intentions in the Horn of Africa. Despite these concerns, Egypt remains committed to promoting regional stability and security through its involvement in the mission.
