MYAWADDY, SOMALIA – February 14, 2025 – The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Atalanta has successfully secured the release of a Yemeni fishing vessel, the Al Najma, which was hijacked off the northern coast of Puntland, Somalia. The operation was a response to a suspected pirate attack on the vessel, which was reported on February 8, 2025.
Swift Response and Rescue
EUNAVFOR Atalanta deployed naval and air assets to the area, conducting an intensive search that led to the successful location and release of the hijacked vessel. The immediate presence of EUNAVFOR forces, particularly the helicopter, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the crew. The 12 crew members were found unharmed, and the alleged pirates had abandoned the vessel after stealing personal belongings and two skiffs.

Ongoing Investigation
The incident is currently under investigation, with EUNAVFOR Atalanta collecting evidence and coordinating with maritime security partners in the region. The Somali forces, Yemeni Coast Guard, and Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) were involved in the exchange of information and support during the operation.
Continued Vigilance
EUNAVFOR Atalanta remains vigilant in its Area of Operations to counter maritime security threats and ensure the safety of vulnerable vessels. The organization strongly recommends merchant and other vulnerable vessels to register in the Maritime Security Centre Indian Ocean (MSCIO)’s Voluntary Registration Scheme (VRS) for effective monitoring and response.
