ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – February 14, 2025 – In a significant move, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged for a ceasefire in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan. This call was made during a high-level humanitarian conference held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, attended by international leaders and representatives from various organizations.

Humanitarian Aid and Ceasefire Appeal in Sudan

The UAE pledged an additional $200 million in humanitarian aid to support the Sudanese people, bringing the total contribution to $600 million since the outbreak of the conflict. UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem Al-Hashimy, emphasized the need for a Ramadan “humanitarian pause” to allow for the safe and unhindered delivery of essential aid.

    International Support and Collaboration

The conference saw participation from key figures such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Kenyan President William Ruto. The collective aim was to mobilize regional and global support to address Sudan’s catastrophic humanitarian crisis and to call for an immediate ceasefire.

    Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite the UAE’s efforts, the Sudanese government has rejected humanitarian aid from the UAE, accusing it of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF continues to pose significant challenges. However, the international community remains hopeful that the ceasefire appeal will pave the way for a political process and diplomatic dialogue to resolve the crisis.
