KAMPALA, UGANDA – February 21, 2025 – Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has ended his hunger strike after his case was transferred from a military court to a civilian court. Besigye, who had been on a hunger strike for eight days, was charged with treason and misprision of treason at Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Legal Developments
The transfer of Besigye’s case to a civilian court follows a ruling by Uganda’s highest tribunal on January 31, which mandated that all cases involving civilians be moved from military courts to civilian courts. Besigye’s lawyer, Erias Lukwago, confirmed that the opposition leader decided to end his hunger strike after achieving his goal of being formally charged in a civilian court.
Health Concerns
Besigye, who appeared in court in a wheelchair, had been in critical condition during his hunger strike. His health had deteriorated significantly, prompting concerns from his supporters and human rights organizations.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite the transfer of his case to a civilian court, Besigye’s legal battle is far from over. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court again on March 7. The opposition leader, along with his co-accused, faces charges of plotting to overthrow the government of Uganda by force of arms.
