As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to revolutionize industries worldwide, Tanzania’s media sector remains cautious about fully integrating this transformative technology. While AI offers opportunities to enhance newsroom efficiency and content production, concerns over misinformation, job security, and ethical implications have slowed its adoption in the country.
A recent study conducted by Tech & Media Convergence (TMC) in collaboration with UNESCO sheds light on the challenges and opportunities surrounding AI in Tanzanian media. The report, titled “The State of Artificial Intelligence for Media Development in Tanzania,” highlights a sector that is both intrigued by AI’s potential and wary of its risks. Out of 350 journalists, editors, and media practitioners surveyed, 73% acknowledged AI’s transformative role in journalism, particularly in content creation, fact-checking, and audience engagement. However, only 22% of newsroom managers had formally discussed AI policies with their teams, reflecting a lack of structured integration.
One of the primary concerns among Tanzanian media professionals is the potential for AI to amplify misinformation and disinformation. With AI’s ability to generate realistic yet false content, many fear that its misuse could erode public trust in journalism. “The power of AI is mental. It’s making fake stuff look real and real stuff look fake, turning lies into the truth and the truth into lies,” said William Shao, a seasoned Tanzanian journalist. This sentiment underscores the need for robust guidelines to ensure responsible AI use in newsrooms.

Job security is another significant concern. As AI tools become more sophisticated, there is growing apprehension about their potential to replace human roles in journalism. While AI can streamline tasks such as transcription, data analysis, and even article drafting, many fear that over-reliance on technology could lead to job losses and a decline in journalistic quality. The study found that 40% of respondents were worried about AI’s impact on employment, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that leverages AI’s benefits without sidelining human expertise.
Despite these challenges, there is a strong appetite for AI training among Tanzanian media professionals. The study revealed that 95% of respondents were eager to acquire AI-related skills, highlighting a gap in formal training programs. To address this, UNESCO and TMC have launched initiatives to equip journalists with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate the AI landscape. These efforts aim to demystify AI and empower media practitioners to use it responsibly and effectively.
Ethical considerations also play a crucial role in the reluctance to embrace AI. Concerns about algorithmic bias, transparency, and accountability have prompted calls for clear, context-specific guidelines. Media stakeholders emphasize the importance of aligning AI integration with journalistic values, ensuring that technology enhances rather than undermines the integrity of the profession.

The Tanzanian government has recognized the need for regulation and support in this area. A committee formed by the Minister of Information in 2023 recommended developing AI integration guidelines to address economic and ethical challenges in the media sector. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of AI’s potential and the importance of proactive policymaking.
While the road to AI adoption in Tanzanian media is fraught with challenges, it also presents opportunities for innovation and growth. By addressing concerns around misinformation, job security, and ethics, the sector can harness AI’s potential to enhance storytelling, improve efficiency, and engage audiences in new and meaningful ways.
As Tanzania navigates this complex landscape, collaboration between media houses, government agencies, and international organizations will be key. The journey toward AI integration is not just about technology but about reimagining journalism in a way that respects its core values while embracing the future.
