Dubai’s bustling streets are no strangers to linguistic diversity, but a Somali man speaking fluent Malayalam in the Thrissur dialect has left Malayalis across the Gulf in awe. Hassan Mohammed Abmoji, a 25-year-old property consultant, has become an internet sensation after a video of him conversing in colloquial Malayalam went viral. His flawless use of Thrissur slang, including phrases like “enthutta gadiye?” (“What’s up, dude?”), has sparked widespread admiration and curiosity.

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Hassan’s journey to mastering Malayalam began in 2008 when his father relocated the family to Kerala in pursuit of better educational opportunities. Settling in Thrissur, Hassan enrolled at Al Azhar English Medium School, where he initially struggled with language barriers. “I didn’t even know English at the time,” Hassan recalls. “My elder brothers helped translate, but I picked up English first and then Malayalam.”

Over the next 15 years, Hassan immersed himself in Kerala’s culture, language, and cuisine. From enjoying porotta and beef to celebrating Onam with neighbors, he embraced every aspect of Malayali life. His fluency in Malayalam became second nature, allowing him to connect deeply with the local community. “Malayalis are everywhere in the world,” Hassan says. “Knowing their language and culture is definitely a bonus.”

Hassan’s academic journey took him to Rajagiri School of Engineering in Kochi, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science engineering. His time in Kerala left an indelible mark, from playing football during the 2018 floods to attending first-day screenings of Malayalam films. “Drishyam is my favorite movie,” he shares, reflecting on his love for Kerala’s vibrant film industry.

Now based in Dubai, Hassan continues to speak Malayalam at home with his siblings, one of whom is currently studying in Ernakulam. His viral video has turned him into an accidental ambassador of Malayali culture in the Gulf, with strangers stopping him on the street to express their amazement. “I’ve had people say, ‘Bro, was that you?’ It makes me really happy,” Hassan says with a grin.

The video has resonated deeply with Malayalis, who see Hassan’s story as a testament to the universal appeal of their language and culture. His ability to speak Malayalam better than many native speakers has sparked conversations about the power of cultural exchange and the importance of embracing diversity.

Hassan’s journey also highlights the role of education and community in fostering cross-cultural connections. His father’s decision to prioritize education in Kerala not only shaped Hassan’s future but also created lasting bonds between his family and the Malayali community. “Kerala became home for us,” Hassan says. “We even tried to buy property there, but it didn’t work out.”

As Hassan’s story continues to inspire, it serves as a reminder of the beauty of cultural integration and the impact of language in bridging divides. His viral fame has brought attention to the rich tapestry of Kerala’s traditions and the global reach of its people.
