Southwest State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen has visited frontline troops in the Bay region to assess military readiness ahead of an expanded offensive against Al-Shabaab. The visit, conducted on May 5, 2025, underscores the regional government’s commitment to reclaiming territory from the militant group and restoring stability in southern Somalia.

During his inspection tour, Laftagareen met with senior military commanders and frontline soldiers, commending them for their dedication to defending the country. He reaffirmed his administration’s full support for the ongoing operations, emphasizing that the fight against Al-Shabaab is a national priority. “There is no retreat, and you have the full support of the government and the people,” Laftagareen declared. “We will soon defeat the Khawarij.”

The visit comes as large-scale offensives continue in the Bay and Bakool regions, where Somali government forces, supported by Southwest Dervish units, are targeting Al-Shabaab strongholds. Last month, Somali National Army and Southwest forces killed approximately 20 Al-Shabaab fighters—including both foreign and Somali commanders—in the Barujed area near Deynunay. The federal and state governments have intensified joint military campaigns across southern Somalia in recent months, aiming to dislodge the group from rural territories and restore civilian governance.

Military officials briefed Laftagareen on the latest security developments, detailing territorial gains and the disruption of Al-Shabaab’s logistics and communication networks. Commanders highlighted the need for urgent logistical support, increased coordination with federal units, and sustained political backing to consolidate security gains. The president assured troops that his administration is working closely with Mogadishu to ensure resources are allocated effectively.

The offensive in Bay region is part of Somalia’s broader strategy to weaken Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and reclaim key areas under militant control. The group has continued to launch attacks on government forces and civilians, despite suffering significant territorial losses. Analysts believe the intensified military campaign could mark a turning point in Somalia’s fight against terrorism, provided that security forces maintain momentum and secure liberated areas.

Laftagareen’s visit also served as a morale boost for troops stationed in the region. Soldiers expressed confidence in their ability to push back Al-Shabaab and secure lasting peace. “We are ready to defend our land and eliminate the threat posed by these militants,” said one officer. “The president’s visit reassures us that we are not alone in this fight.”

The Somali government has pledged to continue supporting regional forces in their efforts to stabilize the country. Officials have emphasized the importance of collaboration between federal and state authorities to ensure a unified approach to counterterrorism. The success of the Bay region offensive could set the stage for similar operations in other parts of Somalia, further weakening Al-Shabaab’s influence.

As Somalia moves forward with its military campaign, the focus remains on securing liberated areas and preventing Al-Shabaab from regrouping. Laftagareen’s visit signals a renewed commitment to defeating terrorism and fostering stability in Southwest State. The coming weeks will be critical in determining the effectiveness of the offensive and the long-term security outlook for the region.
