Jordan has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack on Somalia’s Damaanyo military camp in Mogadishu, reaffirming its solidarity with the Somali government in the fight against extremism. The attack, carried out by a suicide bomber believed to be linked to the Al-Shabaab militant group, resulted in multiple deaths and injuries, further escalating security concerns in the region.
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry issued a statement denouncing the attack, calling it a “heinous act” aimed at destabilizing Somalia’s security and stability. Ministry spokesperson Sufian Qudah expressed Jordan’s unwavering support for Somalia, extending condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a swift recovery for the injured. “Jordan stands with Somalia in confronting terrorism and rejects all forms of violence that threaten peace and stability,” Qudah stated.
The explosion occurred outside the XeroDamaayo camp in Mogadishu’s Hodon district, where Somali army recruits had gathered. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the blast tore through the area, leaving bodies scattered and civilians in shock. A local driver, Adan Yare, recounted how the explosion shook his vehicle as he passed nearby. “I was lucky to have already driven past the area when the blast happened. When I looked back, I saw several people lying on the ground, some dead and others wounded,” he said.
Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that its fighters had targeted individuals enlisting to join the Somali military. The group has intensified its campaign against the Somali government in recent months, carrying out bombings and assassinations aimed at weakening state institutions. In March, Al-Shabaab attempted to strike the presidential convoy in Mogadishu, and in April, militants fired mortar shells near the capital’s airport.
Somali authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, with security forces working to identify those responsible and prevent further incidents. The government has vowed to strengthen counterterrorism measures, urging international partners to support Somalia’s efforts in combating extremism.
Jordan’s condemnation of the attack highlights the broader regional concern over terrorism and instability in the Horn of Africa. The Kingdom has consistently advocated for stronger international cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, emphasizing the need for unified action against extremist groups.
