Somali President Mohamud visited the Ministry of Defense Headquarters in Mogadishu to review the country’s military preparedness as the government escalates its offensive against Al-Shabaab. The visit, which took place on Thursday, saw the president engage in high-level discussions with Defense Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, Army Commander Gen. Odawaa Yusuf Rageh, National Security Advisor Hussein Macalin, and other senior officials.
The meeting focused on Somalia’s security landscape, with military leaders presenting a detailed briefing on recent victories against Al-Shabaab and upcoming operational plans. President Mohamud praised the armed forces for their achievements, particularly in joint operations that have resulted in the elimination of over 120 Al-Shabaab fighters this week. He emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive reforms, including better training, modern equipment, and institutional restructuring to enhance the army’s effectiveness.

“The reform and equipping of the Somali National Army is a national priority. Our commitment is unwavering in ensuring the army has the tools and leadership it needs to eradicate Al-Shabaab and protect our people,” President Mohamud stated.
Military sources indicate that the Somali National Army is preparing new, intensified operations against Al-Shabaab strongholds in various regions, particularly in Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Jubbaland, and Southwest states. The goal is to accelerate territorial gains and dismantle the militant group’s infrastructure, ensuring long-term stability.
President Mohamud’s visit comes amid broader government efforts to strengthen security institutions and build momentum toward national stabilization and upcoming elections. His administration has prioritized military readiness as a cornerstone of Somalia’s security strategy, aiming to eliminate Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and restore peace across the country.
As Somalia continues its fight against terrorism, the president’s engagement with defense officials signals a renewed commitment to bolstering national security. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the government can sustain its territorial gains and push Al-Shabaab out of strategic locations.
