Trent Alexander-Arnold will officially leave Liverpool and join Real Madrid this summer, just in time to play in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Earlier this month, the 26-year-old defender announced that he would not be renewing his contract with Liverpool, ending a 22-year journey with the club. He made his way up from the youth system and became a key player in the team, helping Liverpool win two Premier League titles during his time there.

While many expected him to move to Madrid as a free agent once his contract expired at the end of June, the two clubs have now agreed on an earlier transfer. Real Madrid will pay Liverpool a small fee of £8.4 million, along with covering Alexander-Arnold’s June wages, bringing the total to about £10 million. This means the England international will officially move on June 1, when FIFA’s additional transfer window opens, and he will be eligible to play in the Club World Cup.

Real Madrid originally tried to pay just £840,000 for the early transfer, but Liverpool negotiated a higher amount, ensuring the club gets some compensation before his contract ends.

Liverpool confirmed the transfer in an official statement, saying:
“The full-back is now set to join the La Liga club ahead of the expiry of his Reds contract this summer. Liverpool will receive a fee for his services, with the deal to be concluded once the window opens on June 1. Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes.”

Although the news of his departure upset some Liverpool fans at first — with the player receiving a cold reaction during one of the games — the mood later shifted. He was able to celebrate his farewell with fans during the club’s Premier League title celebrations last weekend.

Alexander-Arnold will be part of Real Madrid’s squad heading to the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup, which starts in two weeks. Madrid will play in Group H and face the following teams:

    • June 18: Al Hilal in Miami, Florida

    • June 22: Pachuca in Charlotte, North Carolina

    • June 26: Salzburg in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Real Madrid’s squad will also feature some new faces beyond just Alexander-Arnold. Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is taking over as head coach, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. The Club World Cup will mark Alonso’s first tournament in charge of the Spanish giants.

Alexander-Arnold’s move marks the end of an era at Liverpool and the start of a new chapter in Spain. With his skills, experience, and leadership, he is expected to make a big impact at Madrid, both in domestic competitions and internationally — starting with the Club World Cup this summer.
