On Sunday, June 22, 2025, Somalia marked a historic milestone with the official launch of Maan-Maal, the country’s first entrepreneurship reality TV show. Held in Mogadishu, the event brought together over 300 guests, including government officials, private sector leaders, educators, youth, civil society, and media representatives. It was a celebration of Somali innovation, youth potential, and the rise of homegrown solutions.

A New Chapter for Somali Entrepreneurs

Maan-Maal, which means “Resources of the Mind,” is more than just a TV show. It’s a national movement aimed at discovering and supporting Somali entrepreneurs from all backgrounds. The program offers training, coaching, mentorship, national exposure, and access to investors. Contestants will pitch their ideas on live television, competing for equity investment and public support.

This initiative seeks to turn ideas into real businesses—boosting the economy, creating jobs, and promoting hope across Somalia.

A Platform Built by Somalis, for Somalis

Dr. Sadiyo Siad, CEO and co-director of Maan-Maal, delivered the keynote speech at the launch. She said the show is about changing how Somalia sees itself—from focusing on survival to embracing innovation.

“We are shifting the national narrative,” she said. “Maan-Maal is built by Somalis, for Somalis, and with Somalis. It gives a platform to youth, women, and returnees to reshape our future.”

    Strong Backing from Key Partners

Salaam Somali Bank is one of the main supporters of the show. Its CEO, Dr. Said M. Abukar, praised the program’s focus on grassroots innovation.

Maan-Maal represents the future of Somali enterprise—bold, innovative, and community-driven,” he said. “This aligns with our mission to support individuals, strengthen businesses, and drive inclusive national development.”

Voices of Support from Across Somalia

The launch featured speeches from respected leaders in business, academia, and civil society:

    • Mr. Mohamud Gabeyre – President, Somali Chamber of Commerce & Industry

    • Dr. Ahmed Khadar Jama – CEO, Somali Bankers Association

    • Prof. Ahmed Gacal Arabow – Association of Somali Universities

    • Ms. Qadro Raage – Somali Women in Business

    • Mama Sahra Ahmed – Somali Civil Society

They all praised Maan-Maal’s inclusive approach and its ability to reach underserved communities, promote job creation, and give a voice to new ideas.

    Strong Government Endorsement

Top government leaders also supported the initiative. Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama called it “a beacon of economic empowerment and social unity.” He said Somalia is full of talent and ideas but lacks investment—something Maan-Maal aims to change.

Minister of Commerce Mahamud Aadan Geesood noted that the show will help reduce youth unemployment, migration, and drug use, calling it “not just a show, but a solution.”

    • Watch & Vote: Viewers can support their favorite contestants through public voting.

Selected candidates will go through a competitive business development journey that includes exposure, training, and access to investors. The show will air across the country, with digital engagement and live events in various regions.
