The world of football is in mourning following the sudden death of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident on July 3, 2025. The crash occurred in the province of Zamora, in northwestern Spain. Spanish authorities confirmed the devastating news, stating that Jota, aged 28, was pronounced dead at the scene alongside his younger brother, André Jota, who also perished in the accident.
Reports indicate that the brothers were traveling along the A-52 highway near the town of Cernadilla when their vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Emergency services responded promptly, but both victims had sustained fatal injuries by the time they arrived.
Jota’s untimely passing comes less than two weeks after his wedding to longtime partner Rute Cardoso in Porto, Portugal. The couple, who share three children, had only just celebrated their union—a moment Jota had described as “a day we will never forget” in his last Instagram post.
Born on December 4, 1996, Diogo Jota rose to fame through clubs like Paços de Ferreira and Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Liverpool in 2020 for a reported £45 million. He quickly established himself as a vital member of the squad, known for his pace, pressing, and sharp finishing. During his time at Anfield, he helped Liverpool secure major honors including the Premier League title, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups.
Internationally, Jota earned 49 caps for Portugal and scored 14 goals, playing in both the UEFA Nations League and European Championships.
