Since returning to office in May 2022, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has demonstrated strategic, principled leadership that is reshaping Somalia’s statecraft. His administration is navigating one of the most complex political and security environments in Africa—and doing so with purpose and national clarity.
A key highlight of his presidency has been the bold defense of Somalia’s sovereignty. When Ethiopia signed a controversial port deal with Somaliland, President Hassan Sheikh led a firm and unified response, mobilizing African, Arab, and global support for Somalia’s territorial integrity. As he stated during national consultations, “We will not compromise one inch of Somali land.”
The President has also rebuilt trust within Somalia’s federal system. Through the reactivation of the National Consultative Council (NCC), he opened dialogue with Federal Member States, leading to progress on the electoral framework and constitutional review. These are crucial steps toward political maturity and inclusive governance.
Security-wise, his administration launched a historic offensive against Al-Shabaab, liberating large areas in Hirshabelle and Galmudug. Unlike past efforts, this campaign is grounded in local community cooperation, showing the President’s belief in people-driven security solutions. His reforms to the Somali National Army and support for a responsible ATMIS transition mark Somalia’s shift to self-reliance.
On the economic front, President Hassan Sheikh’s government has restored international trust, culminating in Somalia’s successful qualification for debt relief under the HIPC initiative. Public financial reforms, digital revenue systems, and a commitment to anti-corruption have laid a foundation for long-term development.
Diplomatically, he has navigated a complex Horn of Africa landscape with careful balance. His administration has deepened ties with Egypt, Gulf states, and the East African Community, while maintaining dialogue with Ethiopia. Somalia’s foreign policy today is one of confident neutrality—anchored in sovereignty, but open to partnerships.
While challenges remain, President Hassan Sheikh’s leadership has brought renewed direction to Somalia’s recovery. His vision of “Somalia at peace with itself and the world” is not just a slogan—it is the guiding principle of a presidency committed to unity, dignity, and resilience.
