Somalia and Kuwait have taken major steps to boost their relationship, signing three important agreements designed to deepen political, economic, and diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The signing took place on Tuesday in Kuwait City during an official visit by Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali. He was hosted by Kuwait’s Foreign Minister, Abdullah Ali Abdullah Al-Yahya, as the two leaders met to discuss ways of strengthening their partnership.
Three Key Agreements
During the meeting, the two ministers signed three agreements aimed at making their cooperation more structured and effective:

Creation of a Joint Committee – This committee will be responsible for identifying and implementing joint projects and initiatives. It will meet regularly to ensure progress in areas of mutual interest, helping both countries benefit from shared opportunities.

Regular Bilateral Consultations – Through this agreement, Somalia and Kuwait will hold consistent high-level discussions on political, economic, and security issues. These consultations will allow both sides to coordinate their positions on regional and international matters and address shared challenges in a timely manner.

Diplomatic Training Cooperation – The third agreement is a memorandum of cooperation between Kuwait’s Saud Al-Nasser Al-Sabah Diplomatic Institute and Somalia’s Diplomatic Studies Institute. This partnership will focus on training diplomats and sharing expertise, which is expected to improve the skills and professionalism of Somalia’s foreign service officers.
Building on Longstanding Ties
The two foreign ministers also spoke about the deep historical ties between Somalia and Kuwait, describing their countries as “brotherly nations.” Both sides acknowledged the importance of maintaining and expanding this relationship, which has existed for decades.
In addition to the agreements, the ministers exchanged views on current regional and global developments, discussing how they could work together to address emerging challenges and seize new opportunities.
Focus on Development and Skills
One of the key highlights of the visit was the focus on capacity building. Through the diplomatic training agreement, Somalia aims to strengthen its ability to engage effectively on the global stage. Kuwait, known for its established foreign service training systems, will share its expertise and resources to help Somalia build a stronger, more capable diplomatic corps.
