Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mohamud Ahmed Adan (Geesood), held a meeting with the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktas, in Mogadishu on Wednesday to discuss ways of deepening the economic partnership between the two countries. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s headquarters and centered on finding practical approaches to boost trade, investment, and industrial development between Somalia and Türkiye.
During their discussions, both sides explored how to strengthen trade relations by identifying new areas of investment that could create mutual economic growth. Minister Geesood emphasized that expanding economic ties with Türkiye is crucial for Somalia’s long-term development goals. He noted that cooperation with a strong trading partner like Türkiye could help drive progress in Somalia’s domestic trade and industrial sectors, which are essential pillars of the country’s national economic agenda.
The minister highlighted that Somalia is currently focusing on building a self-sustaining economy through increased investment in key industries, and partnerships such as the one with Türkiye are vital to achieving this vision. He expressed optimism that enhanced collaboration would help attract more Turkish investors to Somalia, creating opportunities in manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure development.
Ambassador Aktas reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s economic transformation. He commended the Somali government for its efforts to improve the business environment and encourage foreign investment. The ambassador noted that Türkiye remains a trusted partner that stands ready to help Somalia strengthen its trade systems and expand access to international markets.
Both officials agreed to work together to translate their discussions into concrete actions that would deliver tangible benefits for both nations. They also expressed confidence that the long-standing relationship between Somalia and Türkiye, which has steadily grown over the past decade, will continue to flourish through stronger economic cooperation.
Over the years, Türkiye has played a significant role in supporting Somalia’s development across multiple sectors, including security, defense, infrastructure, and education. Turkish companies and organizations have been active in Somalia, helping build roads, hospitals, and schools while also offering scholarships to Somali students. This ongoing partnership has created deep ties between the two nations, grounded in mutual respect and shared goals.
The latest meeting between Minister Geesood and Ambassador Aktas marks another important step in advancing this partnership. It demonstrates both countries’ determination to move beyond traditional aid-based cooperation and focus more on trade and investment as tools for sustainable growth. By fostering stronger industrial cooperation, Somalia hopes to increase local production, create jobs, and reduce its reliance on imports, while Türkiye seeks to expand its business footprint in one of Africa’s most promising emerging markets.
The discussions concluded on a positive note, with both parties agreeing to maintain open channels of communication and to establish follow-up mechanisms that will ensure their economic goals are achieved. The meeting reaffirmed a shared vision of friendship and collaboration, reflecting the growing trust and partnership that continue to define relations between Somalia and Türkiye.
