The Somali National Army (SNA) has opened a new military headquarters in Barawe, located in the Lower Shabelle region, marking a major step in the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen national security and military coordination in southern Somalia. The new facility serves as the official headquarters for the 6th Battalion under the 60th Division of the SNA Ground Forces.
During the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, SNA Commander General Odowa Yusuf Rageh emphasized the importance of the new building in improving the army’s command structure, operational coordination, and overall effectiveness in the region. He noted that the government remains committed to rebuilding the military’s infrastructure and providing soldiers with the tools and resources needed to protect the country.
General Rageh highlighted that the 6th Battalion plays a key role in joint operations with local communities to combat al-Shabaab militants, who continue to threaten security in several parts of southern Somalia. He said the new facility will enhance communication, planning, and deployment within the unit, allowing troops to respond more effectively to security challenges. The Commander also reaffirmed the government’s support for the national army, stressing that improving the welfare and morale of soldiers is a top priority as they continue to defend the nation from terrorist threats.
The establishment of the new headquarters is part of a broader government plan to strengthen Somalia’s defense institutions and modernize the national army. Over the past few years, the SNA has been working to rebuild its infrastructure, reorganize command divisions, and expand its training programs with assistance from international partners. These efforts aim to create a more professional, disciplined, and well-equipped force capable of maintaining stability across the country.
In Lower Shabelle, the SNA has made notable progress in recent months, with security forces reclaiming several areas from al-Shabaab and restoring government control in key towns. General Rageh commended the dedication of Somali soldiers who continue to serve in challenging conditions, often putting their lives on the line for peace and stability.
