Nine well-known Somali politicians have come together to form a new political alliance called the National Dignity Union, putting forward former Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdoon (Saacid) as their candidate for the 2026 presidential election. This announcement marks a significant move in Somalia’s political landscape, as it brings together leaders who have previously been on opposite sides of the political spectrum.

In a joint statement released on Monday, the leaders said they formed the new alliance after holding extensive discussions about Somalia’s current political, security, and economic challenges. They explained that the goal of the National Dignity Union is to restore unity, integrity, and hope in a country they describe as “deeply divided and in crisis.”

The politicians highlighted several pressing issues in Somalia, including the weakening of national unity, a struggling economy, declining social services, and a general loss of faith in government institutions. They expressed concern about the widespread political fragmentation and ongoing insecurity, saying these challenges make it urgent to find a new approach to leadership and governance.

The founding members of the alliance, all of whom resigned from their previous parties, include Abdikarin Hussein Guuleed, Fahad Yasin Haaji Daahir, Mohamed Abuukar Islow Duale, Thabit Abdi Mohamed, Guuleed Salah Bare, Abdi Adan Hoosow, Abdirizak Khilaaf Ahmed, Faarax Ali Shire, and Duale Adan Mohamed. By joining forces, they hope to present a united front that can address Somalia’s deep-rooted problems and offer a fresh vision for the country.

Political analysts in Mogadishu say the creation of the National Dignity Union could shake up Somalia’s political scene ahead of the 2026 elections. By combining leaders from different political backgrounds, the alliance aims to bridge divisions and appeal to a wider group of voters who are frustrated with the status quo.

While the full political platform of the National Dignity Union has not yet been released, insiders indicate the group plans to focus on rebuilding public trust, reforming state institutions, and promoting reconciliation. They also hope to tackle ongoing security challenges, improve governance, and create conditions for economic recovery.

Observers note that Somalia has long faced political instability, economic difficulties, and social divisions. The formation of this alliance reflects a recognition among some of the country’s key political figures that collaboration and unity are essential if the nation is to move forward. By putting forward a candidate like Abdi Farah Shirdoon, who has experience leading the government, the National Dignity Union is signaling its intention to combine expertise with a commitment to national reform.

In the coming months, the alliance is expected to further clarify its policy priorities and outreach strategies as it prepares for the presidential election. Its ability to gain public support and attract other political figures will likely determine how much impact it can have on Somalia’s political future. For now, the creation of the National Dignity Union represents a new chapter in the country’s politics, offering a message of unity, hope, and the possibility of change in a nation long marked by division and uncertainty.
