Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Algerian President Abdulmajid Tabboun have signed a set of landmark agreements to strengthen ties between Somalia and Algeria, focusing on cooperation in education, energy, livestock, and agriculture. The signing ceremony, held in Algiers, marked a new phase in relations between the two nations as they pledged to work together on trade, investment, and regional development.
The agreements were signed by the respective ministers of Foreign Affairs, Education, Livestock, and Petroleum, establishing a framework for long-term collaboration between Mogadishu and Algiers. Through these deals, both countries aim to boost agricultural productivity, encourage livestock trade, and attract investment in oil and natural gas. The partnership also includes new travel arrangements allowing Somali diplomatic passport holders to receive visas upon arrival in Algeria—a move officials said would make it easier for the two governments to coordinate and deepen cooperation.
President Hassan Sheikh expressed gratitude to the Algerian government and people for their warm welcome and enduring friendship. He praised Algeria’s strong record of defending African interests and promoting unity across the continent, saying that Somalia values Algeria as a “true friend and partner” in its journey toward peace and development.
One of the most notable outcomes of the visit was Algeria’s decision to offer 500 scholarships to Somali students. The scholarships will focus on key sectors that are vital to Somalia’s development, including agriculture, fisheries, and petroleum studies. President Hassan Sheikh said the gesture demonstrates Algeria’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s youth and investing in the country’s future. “Algeria’s investment in the education of Somali youth will have a lasting impact on our country’s progress,” he said, calling the scholarships a symbol of genuine friendship and solidarity.
The Somali leader also praised President Tabboun’s leadership in promoting the African Solidarity and Cooperation Fund, describing it as a “visionary initiative” that strengthens unity among African nations while driving sustainable growth. He said Somalia is eager to participate in the fund as part of its efforts to rebuild institutions, create jobs, and achieve economic reform after years of conflict and instability.
Officials from both sides described the agreements as a milestone in Somali-Algerian relations. They said the new partnership will not only open doors for trade and investment but also encourage knowledge sharing in critical areas such as energy, agriculture, and education. The leaders agreed that collaboration among African countries is essential for achieving stability and prosperity across the continent, and they reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing these goals.
The visit ended on a hopeful note, with both President Hassan Sheikh and President Tabboun expressing their determination to continue building on the momentum of the new agreements. They said the partnership reflects the spirit of African solidarity and a shared vision for a more connected, prosperous, and peaceful continent.
