United States President Donald Trump has publicly withdrawn his support for Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling her a “lunatic” and accusing her of shifting politically “far left”. Trump made the announcement on Friday night through a post on his Truth Social platform, where he sharply criticised Greene and dismissed her reliability as an ally.

In his post, Trump claimed Greene “complains constantly” and fails to acknowledge what he described as his strong record in office. The move marks a dramatic turn in their relationship, as Greene has long been one of Trump’s most vocal supporters. She has defended him fiercely in public, aligned herself with his political agenda, and even wore a MAGA hat during President Joe Biden’s 2024 State of the Union address.

However, tensions between them have grown in recent months. Greene has taken positions that differ from the White House and other Republicans, especially during the recent federal government shutdown. She criticised the administration for not having a plan to support Americans who risked losing health insurance subsidies under proposed budget cuts.

A major source of conflict appears to be Greene’s push for transparency regarding files tied to Jeffrey Epstein, the late financier and convicted sex offender. The scandal surrounding Epstein continues to affect several high-profile figures, including Trump. Greene has recently increased her calls for the full release of Epstein-related documents, arguing that Americans deserve to know who was connected to him.

Following Trump’s announcement, Greene posted screenshots of a text message she says she sent the president about the Epstein case. She suggested that her message “sent him over the edge”. She accused Trump of fighting aggressively to prevent the files from being released and argued that his energy would be better spent helping Americans struggling with rising living costs, foreign conflicts, and a fading sense of economic opportunity.

Greene further claimed that Trump’s public attack on her is meant to intimidate other Republicans ahead of an upcoming vote in Congress on releasing the Epstein files. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced that lawmakers will vote next week on whether to require the Department of Justice to disclose all Epstein-related materials. This vote comes after the bipartisan Epstein Files Transparency Act gained enough signatures to bypass House leadership and move forward.

If approved, the measure would force the release of flight logs, travel documents, names of individuals involved in the Epstein investigation, and records connected to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate who was convicted of sex trafficking.

Questions about Trump’s past relationship with Epstein and Maxwell have resurfaced recently. A set of newly released emails from Democrats on the House Oversight Committee claim to show deeper connections between Trump and Epstein, including one message suggesting Trump had spent hours at Epstein’s home with one of the victims. The White House dismissed the emails, calling them meaningless and politically motivated.

Trump has urged his supporters and the general public to ignore the Epstein controversy, repeatedly describing allegations linking him to a supposed “client list” as a Democratic hoax.

In a Friday interview, Greene called Trump’s stance on blocking the release of the files a “huge miscalculation”, though she added that she does not believe he has anything to hide personally.

Trump did not mention Epstein in his statement distancing himself from Greene. Instead, he claimed their differences began when he advised her not to run for governor or senator because she was polling poorly. He also mocked her frustration that he no longer returns her phone calls, saying he cannot answer a “ranting lunatic” every day.

Trump concluded his post by saying Republicans in Georgia are tired of Greene’s behaviour and suggested that if they find an alternative candidate for the next midterm elections, he will fully support that person.
