Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been named the CAF Best Male Referee for 2025 during the CAF Awards ceremony held on Wednesday evening at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, Morocco. His achievement marks a major milestone for Somali football and the East and Central Africa region, especially after a year of officiating several major matches on the continent. Artan’s recognition places him at the top of African refereeing in 2025 and highlights his rise as one of the most respected match officials in the region.
In his acceptance speech, Artan expressed deep gratitude to the Somali football community and everyone who has supported him throughout his career. He said he was honoured to receive the award and encouraged Somali and African players to continue working hard and lifting the level of football across the continent. His message reflected pride not only in his individual achievement but also in the progress Somali football has made over the years.
CECAFA refereeing head Ali Ahmed praised Artan’s accomplishment, calling it a major milestone for the region. He also congratulated Nabadda from Uganda, who won the CAF Best Female Referee award. According to Ahmed, the recognitions awarded to both officials show the growing strength and visibility of referees from East and Central Africa in African football.
Artan’s career has been on a historic rise. He became the first Somali referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup tournament, making him the first from his country and the only centre referee from Sub-Saharan Africa chosen to participate in the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025. This selection placed him among only three centre referees representing Africa at the global tournament, highlighting the level of trust FIFA has in his professionalism and consistency on the field.
Before this global honour, Artan had already carved out a place in African football history. He became the first Somali referee to officiate a continental final when he oversaw the match that saw Egypt’s Pyramids FC defeat South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in Cairo. His strong officiating performance in that game earned him widespread respect and further cemented his reputation as one of the continent’s top referees. Artan has also officiated matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), giving him experience in some of the biggest football environments in Africa.
His continuous rise serves as an inspiration to young Somali referees and players who are striving to make their mark in international football. Artan’s achievements demonstrate that with dedication, resilience, and professionalism, it is possible for referees from countries with developing football systems to reach the highest levels of the game. His success story shines a positive light on Somali football and proves that the country can produce talent capable of competing on global stages.
Artan’s CAF award comes at a time when Somali football is making steady progress, with improving facilities, growing youth programs, and increasing participation in regional competitions. His win is not only a personal victory but also a source of pride for Somalia, CECAFA, and the entire African refereeing community. Artan’s journey continues to inspire many, and his latest achievement adds another remarkable chapter to his historic career.
