Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud has officially taken over as the new commander of the Somali National Army following a formal handover ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence in Mogadishu. The event marked a significant leadership transition as the federal government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national army and intensifying the fight against al-Shabab.

The outgoing commander, Maj. Gen. Odowaa Yusuf Raage, formally handed over his responsibilities during a ceremony attended by senior government officials, military leaders, and representatives of international partners. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre presided over the occasion, alongside Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi and other key security officials. Diplomats and members of the international community were also present, reflecting continued global interest and support for Somalia’s security reforms.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Hamza praised Maj. Gen. Odowaa for his service and leadership, noting that the Somali National Army had made notable progress during his tenure. He said the army had achieved important gains against al-Shabab and that public trust in the national forces had grown as a result of sustained military operations and reforms. According to the prime minister, these achievements laid a strong foundation for the next phase of rebuilding and professionalizing the armed forces.

The prime minister urged the new commander to build on the progress already made by focusing on strengthening the army’s structure, discipline, and operational effectiveness. He emphasized that the Somali National Army plays a central role in defending the country, protecting its unity, and defeating extremist groups that threaten peace and stability. He also reaffirmed the government’s full support for the armed forces, pledging continued investment in training, equipment, and capacity-building to ensure the army can carry out its responsibilities effectively.

Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi described the leadership transition as a normal and healthy part of state governance. He said such changes are necessary to strengthen institutions and ensure accountability within the security sector. The minister thanked Maj. Gen. Odowaa for his dedication and sacrifices, acknowledging the challenges faced by the army during ongoing operations. He welcomed Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud to his new role and assured him of full support from the Ministry of Defence as he assumes command.

Other senior officials echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of unity and coordination among Somalia’s security institutions. The ceremony brought together leaders from the military and police services, demonstrating a shared commitment to national security and cooperation across agencies.

The appointment of Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud follows a decision by the federal government made on January 29, 2026, to restructure the leadership of the Somali National Army. The move comes at a critical time as Somalia continues a multi-front campaign against al-Shabab, particularly in newly recovered areas where stability remains fragile.

The government is relying heavily on its national forces, working alongside international partners, to secure liberated regions, protect civilians, and prevent the militant group from regaining ground. With renewed leadership at the helm of the army, officials say the focus will remain on maintaining momentum, improving professionalism within the ranks, and ensuring long-term security for the country.

As Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Mohamed Mohamud steps into his new role, expectations are high that he will guide the Somali National Army through the next stage of its transformation, strengthening its ability to defend the nation and support Somalia’s path toward lasting peace and stability.
