Somalia’s elite Danab Special Forces, working together with Jubaland state security forces, carried out a planned military operation on Tuesday in areas near Jamaame town in the Lower Juba region. Security officials confirmed that 14 al-Shabab fighters were killed during the raid.

According to officials, one more militant was injured, while others escaped as government troops advanced through the targeted locations. The operation focused on suspected al-Shabab hideouts in rural areas surrounding Jamaame, a district where the armed group has continued to operate despite ongoing military pressure.

Lower Juba has long been considered a key area in the fight against al-Shabab. Although Somali federal forces and regional authorities have stepped up operations in recent years, the group has managed to maintain influence in certain rural communities. Security officials say this latest mission is part of a broader and sustained effort to weaken the group’s presence in southern Somalia.

The Ministry of Defence and the Somali National Army command described the operation as a success and said it fits into a wider national campaign aimed at dismantling al-Shabab’s operational networks. In a statement, the ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring security and stability across the country.

“The armed forces remain committed to eliminating al-Shabab militants and ensuring lasting peace and stability for the Somali people,” the statement said, adding that similar coordinated operations will continue in different regions.

Danab Special Forces, a highly trained unit within the Somali National Army, played a leading role in the mission. The unit, which has received training and support from the United States, is known for carrying out complex and high-risk operations. Over the years, Danab has been involved in targeting senior al-Shabab leaders, destroying training camps, and cutting off key supply routes used by the group.

Jubaland state forces have also been actively involved in security operations across Lower Juba. Working alongside federal forces, they have conducted raids and patrols aimed at stabilizing towns and surrounding rural areas. Officials say close cooperation between federal and regional forces is critical in maintaining pressure on al-Shabab and preventing the group from regrouping.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaida, has been fighting against Somalia’s federal government for more than 16 years. The group frequently carries out attacks targeting security personnel, government officials, and civilians. Its goal is to overthrow the Somali government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Despite years of military campaigns, al-Shabab continues to stage attacks in different parts of the country. However, Somali authorities say recent operations show progress in reducing the group’s ability to operate freely, especially in southern regions like Lower Juba.

Security officials believe that sustained operations, intelligence sharing, and cooperation between federal and regional forces will remain key in weakening the group further. They emphasize that while military gains are important, long-term peace will also depend on continued stabilization efforts and community support.

The latest operation near Jamaame highlights the ongoing efforts by Somali forces to reclaim and secure areas previously influenced by al-Shabab. Authorities say they will maintain pressure on the group as part of their mission to bring greater security and stability to the Somali people.
